Our Newton Lab artistic director, Lucio Furlani, directed the kick-off event for the 2018 Pirelli calendar in New York. The Ghanese-British activist Adwoa Aboah, the Gambian feminist Jaha Dukureh, the Mexican-Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o and the Sudanese-Australian “Alice in Wonderland” Duckie Thot are the protagonists of The Cal 2018 aimed at promoting inclusion, equality and freedom of expression. ‘Historically,’ the photographer Tim Walker said, ‘Alice is a white character, instead it’s time to change narratives in order to find diverse role models for young people.’ During the presentation of the making of the calendar, the protagonists underlined the need for an open society, which is ready to embrace diversity. Thanks to teamwork, Walker and Heat, the stylist Edward Enninful and the backstage photographer Alessandro Scotti created an ambience in which everyone felt free to be natural in playing their characters.
